Date: 2009-05-14 10:27 pm (UTC)You heard right. He was bringing people up on stage with him... and making them wear a Planet of the Apes mask he'd brought and deliver lines.
The best story, though, is how he was introduced. They told him they were going to show a clip of his work, and of course he thought it was going to be from the latest Trek movie. Instead, it was the first thing he'd *ever* done on film, some weird, mannered black-and-white thing.
So when he comes out, he didn't say how much he loved conventions or how great it was to be here, the first words out of his mouth were, "Where did you find THAT?"
He and DeForest were possibly the nicest people on the convention circuit, ever.

Favorite thing about the movie this time? Spock's coat! It's got what looks like coconut patches on the shoulders, but they zip up into a bowl!!!! Classic!! I want one!

Date: 2009-05-14 02:54 pm (UTC)THEY HAD TO CRIPPLE PIKE IN BOTH UNIVERSES?
Yah, if they wanted to have more points of correspondence between the reboot and the original, they could have picked something else. On a completely shallow level, Pike inna wheelchair probably isn't even that well remembered from the old series.

Date: 2009-05-14 04:03 pm (UTC)don't forget his beautiful voice, either.

it's remembered enough to be a joke in a doctor who/star trek parody (with pike compared to davros). so, familiar to people who watched the original series, but probably not people who just watched the movies.

Date: 2009-05-14 03:10 pm (UTC)Oh, so true. At least we finally agree on something.
As for crippling Pike, my mom and I had a VERY long discussion about that and we don't think he was paralyzed at the end of the movie. Just injured. That's our story and we're sticking to it until canon proves otherwise.
PS. I've always thought Bruce Greenwood was a total fucking hot ass and EEEEEEEE SO HOT AS PIKE!!!!!!

they still went, "oh yeah, pike was in a wheelchair in the show, LET'S PUT HIM IN ONE FOR THE MOVIE TOO LOLS". plus, if he's still recovering from injuries that means kirk is promoted from cadet to captain in the space of a few days, which is... awful.
but yeah, bruce greenwood was a sexy pike. good work, casting.

Date: 2009-05-14 07:23 pm (UTC)I prefered that they "re-imagined" it, and I was willing (at the time of watching) to ignore whatever stupid things they decided to do.
also, it wasn't super boring and annoying like most action movies that come out today. It's a fan-fic movie. I'm alright with that. Fan fic writers often get lots wrong and weird.

Date: 2009-05-15 03:24 am (UTC)i know that, as a race, the romulans were primarily employed as villains throughout the various series, but even spock felt that they were worth saving (heck, even worth spending a large chunk of his later years on their planet working towards reunification with the vulcans).
not cool, man, not cool. *shakes head*
also, did you catch the reference to "enterprise" in the movie? :P
