i always heard that he was a wonderful guy, smart and really good with the fans.
You heard right. He was bringing people up on stage with him... and making them wear a Planet of the Apes mask he'd brought and deliver lines.
The best story, though, is how he was introduced. They told him they were going to show a clip of his work, and of course he thought it was going to be from the latest Trek movie. Instead, it was the first thing he'd *ever* done on film, some weird, mannered black-and-white thing.
So when he comes out, he didn't say how much he loved conventions or how great it was to be here, the first words out of his mouth were, "Where did you find THAT?"
He and DeForest were possibly the nicest people on the convention circuit, ever.
