when doctor who is run by seventh doctor fans in ten years, "the curse of fenric" will be held up as the best doctor who evah the way "the caves of androzani" is now. except in ten years people will be actually right.

It's not just me who watched "Caves of Androzani" and went, "THIS is supposed to be the Old School serial to end all Old School serials? WHY?" (And I say this as someone who loves anorak picks like "Pyramids of Mars.")

other than the fact that objectification of peri was so blatant and tactless i could barely watch it, i either hated or was bored by every character in it and didn't care if they lived or died. whereas, say, "the happiness patrol" made me care about the emotions of fake!margaret thatcher, when i actively can't wait for the real one to die.

WHY DID YOU REMIND ME. Gaah.

"whereas, say, 'the happiness patrol' made me care about the emotions of fake!margaret thatcher, when i actively can't wait for the real one to die."

I hear the "Happiness Patrol" commentary track is an extended Maggie Thatcher hatefest. I'd totally listen to that.

you needed more reasons to dislike it?

that's worth the price of a dvd right there.

Eh. It's ok. I prefer Happiness Patrol and Greatest Show in the Galaxy. But you know I'm a sucker for the majorly 80s dystopian stuff. ;-)

hey, i never said fenric was my favourite, i said it'd be the one that everyone will claim is the best evah (is caves really anyone's favourite? i hope not). i've seen it held up as such a couple of times already. give it a few years...

Good point. I mean, I like "Caves" in its own way, but Five-fans have possibly hyped it above its actual merits.

Can I be a heretic and prefer the cleaned-up DVD version of "Fenric" with digital jiggerypokery to compensate for the horrendous overlit conditions and a remixed score by Mark Ayres that Does Not Suck, though?

it is dark and gritty and adult! it is worthy of praise, unlike all that other shit doctor who ever did. apparently.

and yes, yes you can. it can be like preferring the director's cut of blade runner.

I am proud to say I am a Fifth Doctor fan who hates "The Caves of Androzani." I hate it not only because My Doctor dies, but because it's all depressing doom-and-gloom and foreshadowing to how depressing the Seventh Doctor era would be.

I also hate everything related to the Seventh Doctor era, with the exceptions of Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred as human beings. (Oh, and Bonnie Langford, too, I suppose, but I don't know her as "well" as I know the other two.) I especially despise the novels, and would never EVER consider them cannon. (Ditto Big Finish, at least for anything involving Erimem.)

Besides, I don't know what you're complaining about, DW fandom was ruled by Seventh Doctor fans from 1990-2005. It would be going backwards to have the fandom ruled by them. (I can only hope that in 10 years, the Rose obsessives will finally GO AWAY.)

i loved the first ep of caves when it looked like it was going to be interesting and a little mindfucky. then it was tedious and awful and ended with anthony ainley's rotating head.

I also hate everything related to the Seventh Doctor era, with the exceptions of Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred as human beings.

does this mean you hate THE KANDYMAN??? D:

dw fandom wasn't ruled by seven fans from 1990-2005, it was ruled by fans who hated seven but weren't allowed to do anything else but write about him until the eighth doctor came along, and then nobody knew wtf to do with him!

You know, this explains the NAs SO MUCH.

The TV Seventh Doctor era is much less depressing than the late Fifth Doctor era and Sixth Doctor era. It doesn't have any companions being killed off, it doesn't have any stories that are entirely about the guest cast brutally murdering one another while the Doctor is utterly ineffectual, and whatever you think about the socialism, it at least implies a world view in which human nature is capable of improving.

Yeah, the couple of Seven serials I've seen definitely have a spirit of "The victory's in the struggle" coming off them, in a good way.

genesis is dark and gritty but i don't want every character onscreen to die in a fire so i can stop having to look at them. also harry gets his foot stuck in a giant clam. it should obviously win.

I like Caves and Fenric. :) I mean, Caves is depressing and not a personal favorite by any means, because I am soft and don't like to watch sad things, but I think it's really, really good. Fenric is good, if confusing, though I prefer several other Seven serials. In general, I'm pretty happy to settle down with anything from the Fifth or Seventh era.

NEITHER. For someone with the power of the internets my viewing quota is sadly incomplete. ;;

Brain needs to get in gear so I can engage with the subject again but thennnnn, thennnnn there shall be lots of Seventh Doctor watching.

sometimes i feel like the only fanboy who doesn't come in his pants over caves. i think i only know one other fanboy who loves seven. ...which is why i tend to hang around livejournal as opposed to the OG/DWF/GB. also this is where all the porn is.
