Rupert Everett comes to BBC ONE as Sherlock Holmes
Date: 15.06.2004

Following the success of Hound of the Baskervilles, Sherlock Holmes is returning to BBC ONE later this year with Rupert Everett as the sleuthing lead and Ian Hart reprising his role as Holmes' sidekick, Watson.

"We're absolutely thrilled that Ian is reprising his role as the inimitable Doctor Watson and that Rupert Everett is to take on the role of Holmes, in what is a landmark piece of casting," said Greg Brenman, Executive Producer at Tiger Aspect.

"The fact that Rupert – with a highly successful film career – was attracted to the script is a real testament to the quality of Allan Cubitt’s writing, Simon Cellan Jones' direction and the production team."

The original screenplay by Allan Cubitt – who also wrote a visceral adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic Hound of the Baskervilles as a thriller for a 21st Century audience – re-unites an estranged Holmes and his friend Doctor John Watson in a desperate bid to solve a case which threatens to overwhelm the privilege and tranquillity of Edwardian aristocratic society.

The Tiger Aspect production will begin filming in London in August, and will be directed by Simon Cellan-Jones and produced by Elinor Day.

The BBC has not ruled out the possibility of further Sherlock Holmes films in the future.

Gareth Neame, BBC Head of Drama Commissioning adds: "Audiences on BBC ONE were thrilled by Allan Cubitt's adaptation of Hound of the Baskervilles, so we were delighted to have this original Holmes and Watson mystery from Allan and the same production team.

"Rupert Everett seems an absolutely perfect Holmes."

Hound of the Baskervilles was broadcast Christmas 2002 and received an audience of over 7.5m viewers.

Ahahahahahaaa! They kept everything I liked about the last production, and got rid of the one thing I didn't like -- Richard Roxburgh. And replaced him with freaking RUPERT EVERETT. That is brilliant!! So... perfect... And Ian Hart is still playing Watson!! Ah the goodness!!! OMG I love you BBC!!!

Here's the story, kids!

I am without words.

*flails arms*

Although, I was actually thinking the other night that MY perfect Holmes would be Jeremy Irons. But still... Rupert Everett!! Wahh!!! He'd definately be my second choice.

Well, Jeremy Irons is too old now (unless they do a Mary Russell film of course...) especially if cute li'l Ian Hart is playing Watson. I mean, Rupert Everett is too pretty to play Holmes, but at least he is tall and skinny and has dark hair! Some people might think he'll make Holmes "gay", but other than there being NO PROBLEM WITH THAT WHATSOEVER, the last production with Roxbergh was fairly slashy as well. I mean, it starts off with them in a Turkish Bath, wearing only towels, and Holmes saying "Hot enough for you, Watson?" Geez Louise.

Yes, well, seeing as how I just finished reading the first three Mary Russell books, I suppose that is why I was thinking of Jeremy Irons as Holmes. I do agree that Rupert Everett will make an ideal younger Holmes (and yes, Ian Hart is an adorable younger Watson!). I'm very much looking forward to this new movie!!

That sounds like quality in the making. Are you back from Ox-bow then? How was that? I should call you if indeed you have returned.
