It's not just me who watched "Caves of Androzani" and went, "THIS is supposed to be the Old School serial to end all Old School serials? WHY?" (And I say this as someone who loves anorak picks like "Pyramids of Mars.")

Eh. It's ok. I prefer Happiness Patrol and Greatest Show in the Galaxy. But you know I'm a sucker for the majorly 80s dystopian stuff. ;-)

Good point. I mean, I like "Caves" in its own way, but Five-fans have possibly hyped it above its actual merits.

Can I be a heretic and prefer the cleaned-up DVD version of "Fenric" with digital jiggerypokery to compensate for the horrendous overlit conditions and a remixed score by Mark Ayres that Does Not Suck, though?

I am proud to say I am a Fifth Doctor fan who hates "The Caves of Androzani." I hate it not only because My Doctor dies, but because it's all depressing doom-and-gloom and foreshadowing to how depressing the Seventh Doctor era would be.

I also hate everything related to the Seventh Doctor era, with the exceptions of Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred as human beings. (Oh, and Bonnie Langford, too, I suppose, but I don't know her as "well" as I know the other two.) I especially despise the novels, and would never EVER consider them cannon. (Ditto Big Finish, at least for anything involving Erimem.)

Besides, I don't know what you're complaining about, DW fandom was ruled by Seventh Doctor fans from 1990-2005. It would be going backwards to have the fandom ruled by them. (I can only hope that in 10 years, the Rose obsessives will finally GO AWAY.)

I've never understood how Caves pulled ahead of Genesis of the Daleks in the first place.

I like Caves and Fenric. :) I mean, Caves is depressing and not a personal favorite by any means, because I am soft and don't like to watch sad things, but I think it's really, really good. Fenric is good, if confusing, though I prefer several other Seven serials. In general, I'm pretty happy to settle down with anything from the Fifth or Seventh era.

Dunno if Fenric will be held up thusly, but I am sooooooooooo glad I'm not alone in said assessment of Caves.
