I love how in each one Holmes and Watson are progressively closer to each other and closer to the truth about each other and their relationship. Interesting, as that is not how I saw it at all!
I also like that they get bleaker and bleaker until the last one, which is full of hope. Yes, even I though they were a bit depressive, which is one reason I ended with that particular bit (also, they are in chronological order, which is ridiculous since they never occured in the same universe). But then I wrote the Trevor story, and I though that pepped things up quite a bit -- admittedly Holmes has been shot, but he will have Trevor to look after him as he recovers (again!).
