Buckland kept numerous animals at his house in Islip, the most famous of which was a young bear named Tiglath Pileser or "Tig". Tig was properly outfitted with cap and gown and for some time resided at Christ Church College, attending wine parties and even the meeting of the British Association at Oxford in 1847. He was subsequently expelled from the college and, having become unruly after developing a "sweet tooth", ended his life in a zoo.
