SAVE US SWEET TINKERBELL JESUS

a clip from the rex is not your lawyer pilot has surfaced:

the absolute atrocity that is tennant's atempt at an american accent almost distracted me from how shit the writing was. almost.

that said, he's extremely hot. WHEN HE IS NOT TALKING OMG

[identity profile] skipthedemon.livejournal.com 2010-08-14 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It took me a second to realize that *was* Tennant. And then I only made it about another ten seconds in before I stopped. I may try again after being fortified with tea.

Wow, it makes him sound even younger, and he has the worse of that nasal quality some Brits get when they try for American. It works for House. Not so much here.

[identity profile] prof-pangaea.livejournal.com 2010-08-14 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
he sounds like he's doing a bad impression of alicia silverstone.

i could only deal with it for about 3-5 seconds at a time before i would have to pause the video in horror. it took a while to watch a one minute clip.

Oh. Oh dear.

This, I think, is the universes way of telling producers to let Tennant use his own accent.

;____;

[identity profile] prof-pangaea.livejournal.com 2010-08-14 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
i just had a horrible thought -- he's not going to try to be american in fright night, is he? IS HE?? D: D: D:

[identity profile] reasonabsurd.livejournal.com 2010-08-14 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I cannot listen to this. Why would he do that to his pretty voice? Why?

[identity profile] neadods.livejournal.com 2010-08-14 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Because he thinks he's good at it, I think. He's done American accents elsewhere that weren't that good, but he keeps being asked to do it.

I was so afraid he'd try to pass for American in this, and he can't. What were the producers THINKING?

It isn't quite as awful as Philip Glenister's Demons accent, but it's right up there.

Still, the finger-licking makes up for a lot.

Glenister's I found awful-awful, like I cringed every time I heard it. Tennant's is making me grin stupidly at the badness. (Do not worry, I judge myself lots.)

holy crap! this is awful. you know, he sounds a lot like mike cutter from law & order (also played by a british guy, but the accent is much better in my opinion). i can see why this show got canceled...

someone on facebook said, "This is why you don't get vocal lessons from 1960's tour guides at the top of the Empire State Building." i lolled.

<3 Yeah, his accent is a bit shit, but in a sexxxxy way.

it is certainly something, isn't it?

Holy shit, that's bad! Kind of makes up a bit for Americans who massacre the British accent, though.

[identity profile] prof-pangaea.livejournal.com 2010-08-14 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
i just rewatched the clip and i wasn't as viscerally horrified as i was the first time; but, that just made me listen more to terrible, terrible dialogue. IT IS A NO-WIN SCENARIO

[identity profile] jigglykat.livejournal.com 2010-08-14 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if I can bring myself to watch it!

THAT WAS HILARIOUS. He kept half-lapsing into Scottish. What the hell do they teach kids at British drama schools?

[identity profile] prof-pangaea.livejournal.com 2010-08-14 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
i was more wondering what his dialogue coach had been teaching him, but i dunno. he does a pretty good english accent (and even i can hear that one slip a little sometimes), but other than that i've never heard one from him that didn't give me massive embarassment squick.

[identity profile] wra1th22.livejournal.com 2010-08-14 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
i would have preferred Burke and Hare.

That was tragic in a not-so-comic way. I'm actually kind of intrigued by what they were going for in the idea of the show; yes, the dialogue was shit, but the "asshole with performance issues" + good deed of the week angle sort of appeals to me.

[identity profile] prof-pangaea.livejournal.com 2010-08-17 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
when i heard the premise of the show i thought, "that could either we really interesting and quirky, like monk, or really incredibly shit." i think the clip is pointing in one direction more than the other.

[identity profile] airie-fairy.livejournal.com 2010-08-14 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
His obvious yet futile struggle to get his jaw around that accent is oddly endearing.

[identity profile] prof-pangaea.livejournal.com 2010-08-15 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
i laughed so hard at this comment. YOU CAN SEE HIS JAW TRYING TO MAKE THE SOUNDS RIGHT

*snickers. forever.*

They should have just let him do his Sean Connery voice like he so clearly wanted to.

[identity profile] prof-pangaea.livejournal.com 2010-08-17 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I HAD THIS EXACT THOUGHT. sean connery played a russian submarine commander with a scottish accent, surely david tennant can play a chicago lawyer with one?

If the show had been picked up I probably would have watched it with the sound off and the captions on. Which is not probably normal, but he is very nice to look at.

[identity profile] zougla.livejournal.com 2010-08-15 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe his accent would have gotten better eventually or at least settled on something bearable. The show, however, looks like it would always be vomit inducing. ick.

Oh GOD. I wasn't going to watch it but then I started and, and, and, ARGH.
Don't do this to me, Tennant. At least it gets better after the first 6 seconds or so. His first lines just sound like, a Scottish guy with his mouth full or something.
I think the worst part is that his voice loses all that lovely resonance.

I probably would have watched it on Hulu at random times and made a spectacle of myself yelling at the screen.

Erm, hi, by the way. New to lj. This long-time lurker has finally gotten a journal.

[identity profile] radiantbaby.livejournal.com 2010-08-17 10:36 am (UTC)(link)
That clip only works on mute, yes. That way I can live in denial and believe that accent was only a bad dream.
