a clip from the rex is not your lawyer pilot has surfaced:

the absolute atrocity that is tennant's atempt at an american accent almost distracted me from how shit the writing was. almost.

that said, he's extremely hot. WHEN HE IS NOT TALKING OMG

i just rewatched the clip and i wasn't as viscerally horrified as i was the first time; but, that just made me listen more to terrible, terrible dialogue. IT IS A NO-WIN SCENARIO

someone on facebook said, "This is why you don't get vocal lessons from 1960's tour guides at the top of the Empire State Building." i lolled.

You're probably right. NBC was pretty desperate for new shows at that point, but that accent is not good -- not to mention the whole premise of the show was flawed, IMO.

(Now, if you want to hear a flawless American accent from a DW actor, I suggest checking out the teaser trailer for Undercover, which stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw and which NBC did pick up.)

That was tragic in a not-so-comic way. I'm actually kind of intrigued by what they were going for in the idea of the show; yes, the dialogue was shit, but the "asshole with performance issues" + good deed of the week angle sort of appeals to me.

His obvious yet futile struggle to get his jaw around that accent is oddly endearing.

Linus Roache (horrible name, I know) as Mike Cutter on L&O doing an American accent.

*snickers. forever.*

They should have just let him do his Sean Connery voice like he so clearly wanted to.

If the show had been picked up I probably would have watched it with the sound off and the captions on. Which is not probably normal, but he is very nice to look at.

Maybe his accent would have gotten better eventually or at least settled on something bearable. The show, however, looks like it would always be vomit inducing. ick.

sure makes total sense. why costar in a movie with Simon Pegg, Christopher Lee and Tom Wilkinson? and get direction from that hack John Landis? When you could be in one of those lawyer dramas with ... um ... Jerry O'Connell?!

Oh GOD. I wasn't going to watch it but then I started and, and, and, ARGH.
Don't do this to me, Tennant. At least it gets better after the first 6 seconds or so. His first lines just sound like, a Scottish guy with his mouth full or something.
I think the worst part is that his voice loses all that lovely resonance.

I probably would have watched it on Hulu at random times and made a spectacle of myself yelling at the screen.

Erm, hi, by the way. New to lj. This long-time lurker has finally gotten a journal.

That clip only works on mute, yes. That way I can live in denial and believe that accent was only a bad dream.

when i heard the premise of the show i thought, "that could either we really interesting and quirky, like monk, or really incredibly shit." i think the clip is pointing in one direction more than the other.

I HAD THIS EXACT THOUGHT. sean connery played a russian submarine commander with a scottish accent, surely david tennant can play a chicago lawyer with one?

Exactly! And he played a Spanish-Egyptian immortal and a British secret service agent with a Scottish accent; surely Tennant should have been allowed to play a Time Lord with one! XD
