in order to move forward with one thing, something has to be left behind

mr. prof linked me to this short bbc radio documentary: Middle C, which is a first person account of a year-long period in the transition of the opera singer tristan whiston, from coming out to family, to his first shot of testosterone, to shaving, to scheduling chest surgery. it's extremely moving. all of the emotions and experiences will be very familiar to any trans person, but the thing that's really remarkable is the documentation of how his transition affects his singing, and how he thinks about himself and reflects on what he can still claim of his life pre-transition.

Thanks for the link; I especially loved hearing the story of someone who transitioned at an older age (almost as old as me!) and who had gone through doubts and through periods of "sleep," as Tristan put it, in which he tried not to think about his gender.

The audio montage of his changing voice at the end nearly brought me to tears.
