I don't really remember her transcending any selfishness. I always found her best moments to be when she did stuff. Rather than waiting around for someone else to tell her what to do.
I have an on-again off-again liking for Father's Day. Sometimes I really enjoy it and other times I hate it. I think it was an interesting idea but had a major problem in that Rose wasn't really punished for what she did. Sure she almost destroyed the world, but she wasn't punished. Which is why she didn't really learn anything from the experience.
