surely you must have played tetris at some point. even if you don't know the music, the blocks falling down to fit into one another must have been recognisable?

No, I have never played Mario or Tetris in my life. I recognized the blocks when Brandon said "Tetris!", otherwise I might not have. The only video game I have ever played is Duck Hunt, and that was once when I was a kid. I did recognize the Mario music because my cousin Chris used to play it all the time when we were kids; seriously he'd have it on every time we visited their house. I just don't care for video games, never have. Will and I didn't even own a gaming system when I was growing up.

tetris was not developed for a game platform, it was developed in the soviet union as a side project of a computer scientist in a research lab, and then was traded freely around the soviet block for a few years before it trickled out into the western world and became a commercial commodity. because of its origins in a communist state no one technically owns the copyright for tetris (although nintendo owns the specific iteration they made for nintendo, and the music that they made for it), so there are clones on most home computers, etc. and they can even be called "tetris", and not "block game!" or something.

I missed some of the less culturally iconic ones, but that was completely awesome. (You know, I teared up a little at the end too. Might have been the power of suggestion.)

tetris (nes - tetris blocks descending)
mortal kombat (multi-platform - spells MK and then the dragon logo)
pokemon (nes - i love that the pokeballs open up and two people come out and fight each other!)
legend of zelda (nes - the sword and the triforce)
super mario brothers (nes - jumping and hitting blocks, then something from the snes game i never played, then back to the nes for the water level, the warning music, and then jumping on the flag at the end of a level outside the castle)

i love the nes music for tetris. it's so excellent.
