I'm thinking that whomever told you that "lay" was incorrect may have read that part as "Holmes watched Russell, and Donleavy lay on the tile" as in, they were both lying on the tile, which would be correct. However, I'm pretty sure you meant it to mean that only Donleavy lay on the tile; a singular person would simply lay.
