First off, Prof -- this is absolutely terrible news. I am so happy that you are mostly-okay, but that must have been such a scary experience. I hate people sometimes. :( *hugs*

Second, I concur with drho on the Crime Victim's Compensation. When I was shot, I had no medical insurance and they paid my hospital bills. If I remember, there is a bunch of paperwork, but definitely worth it.
