the next doctor (for real!)

New Doctor Who to be announced on special episode of Doctor Who Confidential this Saturday.

THAT IS TOMORROW MY FRIENDS TOMORROW. O___O!!!

eta: apparently it has been retitled "the eleventh doctor" (it had previously been titled "the ten doctors"). omg guys!

Eek, suddenly I'm incredibly nervous. This is the first change of Doctor I've been through as a fan of the show.

[identity profile] prof-pangaea.livejournal.com 2009-01-02 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I KNOW. by the time i was able to get series 1 it had already been announced that chris eccleston was leaving. then when i watched PotW and tennant appeared i was like, "woah, weasely. also: get a haircut." but i had no idea who he was. aaaaand i wasn't in fandom, so i wasn't all keyed up and such. i just hoped i'd like him. NOW I AM INVESTED.

[identity profile] kindkit.livejournal.com 2009-01-02 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
*grins* My reaction to Ten was "Whoa, hotter than a hot thing!" And it was my attraction to him that kept me watching the show long enough to give it a real chance and learn to enjoy it for itself. So Tennant is "my Doctor" in that sense, even though I've come to love most of the other Doctors as well. I want a worthy successor!

Like you said, INVESTED.

[identity profile] prof-pangaea.livejournal.com 2009-01-02 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't think i really started finding tennant that attractive until s3. i think it has something to do with his acting being much better in s3, probably because of generally better scripts. also with the doctor starting to act like... the doctor. and, shallowly, he got a better haircut. oh! and the sideburns were much beter. yes.

now i LOVE him, but that's mainly because i've seen him in other things, and know what a great actor he can be, and because he is such a fanboy, and he just seems so generous and like he... *gets* doctor who. i doubt i'll get that feeling from whoever takes the role next, probably because they won't be as invested in it as tennant has been (which, i mean, who could be?), but that hardly matters if they're good. which i do think they will be!

am still futilely hoping for chiwetel ejiofor, even though i absolutely know it won't be him. i am expecting it to be paterson joseph. we shall see in 24 HOURS OMG.

[identity profile] kindkit.livejournal.com 2009-01-02 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Paterson Joseph would be great. But The Guardian are suddenly talking about some guy called Ben Wishaw, who's white and floppy-haired and pretty in the way where he looks like he should be in an emo band. I greatly fear it will be him.

*googles ben wishaw*

oh FUCK NO. i mean, he's cute, but NO. i'm going to say i doubt this one, because he's too physically similar to tennant.

that said, i will really be disgruntled if they cast another white guy. IT CANNOT HAPPEN.

[identity profile] kindkit.livejournal.com 2009-01-02 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Although I'd like to see an actor of color in the role, I could live with a white actor being cast so long as he's good. What I really don't want is somebody who's chosen because he's white, and pretty in a way that will supposedly appeal to young [white] girls.

[identity profile] prof-pangaea.livejournal.com 2009-01-02 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
yes, exactly.

[identity profile] violetisblue.livejournal.com 2009-01-02 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconding this very, very strongly.

[identity profile] in-the-end.livejournal.com 2009-01-02 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
My main issue with that casting is that he's 28. 28 is too young in my opinion.

[identity profile] prof-pangaea.livejournal.com 2009-01-02 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, much too young to play the doctor. they need someone at least tennant's age, hopefully a couple years older.

there is some angry wishaw fan on the anonmeme jumping on anyone who is like "no thanks pls!" oh god i don't think i can deal with a whole new boatload of teeny-bopper fans PLS BBC DON'T MAKE IT HAPPEN.

Ian McKellen for Eleven!

It's my impossible fantasy and I'll cling to it if I want to.

and also

And s/he really needs to shut up soon, before the straw man arguments and the completely not understanding how racism works cause some anon who is totally not me to lose their temper.

like me, you mean? but seriously: OF COURSE THE 'FLOPPY-HAIRED WHITE PRETTY BOY' (THAT YOU DON'T RECOGNISE ISTANTLY, SO HE MUST BE A TALENTLESS CASTING-COUCH FUCKTOY). right, because anyone in that thread said anything like that ever. dude, the original comment wasn't about whether ben wishaw is a good actor. it's about whether white privilege exists. guess what? IT DOES.

eta: now the anon is declaring me too irrational to debate with. lols.

Yep, that was totally what I the OP said. Or anyone else.

It's always hilarious, in a completely unfunny way, to watch people lose their shit over someone pointing out that racism exists.

*reads the threads* Wow, someone should point out to her she can still masturbate to the happy Ben-thoughts all she likes even if he's not cast, the Evil Flying PC Squad is hardly stopping her.

"oh god i don't think i can deal with a whole new boatload of teeny-bopper fans PLS BBC DON'T MAKE IT HAPPEN."

It would be disgustingly cynical casting, besides being just...boring. I really hope it's not true.

[identity profile] prof-pangaea.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
how can she ever be happy, knowing that people like us are out there, not caring about hot white boys enough. HOW?

i really do think he's too physically similar to tennant for them to cast him. they've never cast a doctor who looked at al like the previous one -- they've always done their best to make them totally new and different. well, within the white british male spectrum. but still!

"how can she ever be happy, knowing that people like us are out there, not caring about hot white boys enough. HOW?"

It's why all the pretty white boys are so emo, they know we don't care enough and it makes them HURT INSIDE.

I would tend to agree re there being too much surface similarity, but then I have such a terrible prediction track record for this show I don't want to make any actual guesses.

Me tooooooooooooooo. The first change of Doctor was like totally minor to me. [livejournal.com profile] midnightlurker had shown me a couple Nine episodes he'd taped off sci-fi when I'd visited him last and they were cool, but I wasn't really in the fandom. I was interested in the show, but the DVDs cost too fricking much and I didn't have enough hard drive space to download episodes on my old computer.

I stumbled upon it in Wikipedia at random one day and I was all, oh, hey, isn't that the guy they've got to play Barty Crouch?

The first change of Doctor was like totally minor to me.

i was definitely into who enough to be concerned about whether i would like tennant as much as eccleston, but also not into it enough to be actually worried. i figured they would cast someone who would be fairly good, no matter what, and even if i didn't like him as much he would still be fine. which... is what i still think now, actually. hmm. but! if it's someone i LOVE i will be so much more happy than i would have been last time. and i don't have any doctors i actually loathe, so i figure the worst that will happen is that i will be a bit "meh". and there is fic to fix that. i even like jack sometimes in fic.

downloading! back when i was a lad we had to request VHS tapes from the public library, and sometimes they were on the other side of town! actually, back when i was a lad i had no doctor who at all. :( but when i was a young adult there was BBC america playing old who every morning at 8:00 am. well, for the few months we had digital cable. then later was the chicago public library system! the cover for paradise towers was always too fantastically bad for me to take it out. i still haven't seen it.

I stumbled upon it in Wikipedia at random one day and I was all, oh, hey, isn't that the guy they've got to play Barty Crouch?

so was i! that didn't really convince me it was the best casting ever, since he was a bit... bad in it.
