Pertwee's book I Am The Doctor mentions that one day the whole cast showed up with eyepatches for a joke.

That sounds about right... and AWESOME. Thanks for the excellent information! As to the German (fake German...?) apparently we shall have to suffer ignorance for some amount of time yet...
