I found Talalay's direction a little distracting at times, but honestly, I think that was just her adhering to the show's visual aesthetic.

As for the rest of it: 1) it's Gatiss, so lower expectations appropriately, and 2) how spoiled do you want to be? The thing that annoyed me most is pretty spoilery.

I still like it. And the Victorian special. I FUCKING HATED this. My taste is a many-splendored thing, or something.

Hey, you might love it and wonder what the hell my problem is, it's a big beautiful world. Just, when I watch Elementary I'm absolutely convinced that Sherlock and Joan are platonic soul mates and that he's a better person for having known her, but I am still completely mystified as to why Sherlock and John bother with each other at all. Among the many, many other things I disliked about this one.

I rewatched "Reichenbach Fall" a few months ago after not having seen it in ages, and I agree, it's probably the best episode they ever did. S3 doesn't do anything with any of the potential in it, but probably because I'm, dare I say it, filthy-casual about all things Sherlockian I still enjoyed it.

my problem has always been that holmes and watson don't seem like actual friends, who like each other, let alone love each other.

this was always my issue with the series and other than Reichenbach Fall i never fully got it. maybe it's just because Elementary has so much more time to build out the relationship, but i found myself comparing the two and Sherlock always felt like it came up short

fwiw i heard some stuff about the latest that made me weirdly relieved i'd bailed on the show earlier, ymmv though.

Aw man that sucks, especially when it's a show you're invested in or wanted to be. At least there's still Elementary?

Re: Gatiss, yeah. It feels like when they're together they get a little too, idk. Caught up in trying to be clever or something, and they lose the plot and characterization.
